JOTUN CHOOSES KENT SMOKE & FIRE CURTAINS FOR THE NEW R&D CENTER IN DUBAI
admin2025-11-08T07:18:07+00:00Integrating Certified Fire Safety into Advanced R&D Environments
Jotun, one of the world’s leading paint and coating manufacturers, selected Kent Smoke and Fire Curtains to supply and install automatic fire curtain and egress curtain systems for its new R&D Center and Regional Headquarters at Dubai Science Park.
The 31,000 m² facility, features sloped roof structures and large open voids that required precise fire compartmentation and smoke control. These complex geometries demanded a system offering certified protection, architectural discretion, and seamless integration with the building design.
To meet these requirements, Holford Associates (Lead Consultant) and Amana Steel Buildings Contracting LLC (Main Contractor) partnered with Kent, with over 30 years of expertise in certified fire and smoke curtain systems for complex architectural projects.
Project Overview & Certification
Installation and commissioning of Kent’s Automatic Fire Curtain Systems and Egress Curtains were completed in collaboration with FERCO Shutters Dubai, Kent’s authorised supply and installation partner.
The project was completed in Q4 2022, marking another successful application of Kent’s smoke and fire curtain solutions across the Middle East.
All Kent systems are tested and certified to UL and BS EN standards, including UL 10D, UL 1784, and BS EN 1634, with third-party accreditation through CERTIFIRE and Dubai Civil Defence approval, ensuring traceability, reliability, and global compliance.
Manufactured under Factory Production Control (FPC) at Kent’s Dubai facility, these systems combine stringent quality assurance, efficient lead times, and responsive technical coordination — critical to meeting Jotun’s design and construction schedule.
Kent Automatic Fire & Egress Curtain Systems
Kent’s Automatic Fire Curtain System provides a concealed, gravity-fail-safe barrier designed for integration within ceiling or bulkhead voids. On activation, it deploys automatically to form a continuous, fire-rated enclosure delivering up to 240 minutes of fire resistance.
For areas requiring evacuation, the egress variant incorporates a built-in escape opening that enables safe passage without powered mechanisms. This configuration supports life safety and architectural intent, ensuring compliant compartmentation within open-plan zones such as laboratories and atriums.
Conclusion
The Jotun R&D Center demonstrates how UL and BS EN-certified automatic fire curtain systems can be seamlessly integrated into advanced research environments. In R&D facilities, where laboratories, testing zones, and storage areas often contain flammable materials, pressurised systems, and interconnected spaces, effective fire and smoke compartmentation is vital. These systems help contain both horizontal and vertical fire spread, safeguard critical equipment, and preserve safe evacuation routes — ensuring occupant safety and business continuity in the event of an emergency.
Through coordinated design, rigorous testing, and accredited performance, Kent Smoke and Fire Curtains delivered a solution that meets the highest standards of fire integrity, smoke control, and architectural integration.
