Kent Smoke and Fire Curtains has successfully supplied and installed one of the largest static draft curtain systems in the UAE at KIZAD Logistics Park, part of the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) — the nation’s largest integrated industrial and free-trade zone.
The development, comprising KLP-4, KLP-5, KLP-6, and KLP-7, features mixed-use warehousing and light industrial units covering more than 580,000 m². Within this vast complex, Kent delivered 59 static draft curtain units ranging from 24 m to 100 m in width and drops up to 3.3 m.
The installation was executed by Ferco Shutters, Kent’s authorised supply and installation partner in the UAE.
Why Static Draft Curtains Are Essential in Warehouses and Industrial Buildings
In large-volume industrial facilities, smoke management is a critical element of fire-safety strategy. When a fire occurs, hot smoke rises and spreads laterally beneath the roof, quickly forming a smoke layer that can obscure visibility, endanger occupants, and complicate firefighting operations.
Static draft curtains are permanent, non-mechanical fabric barriers designed to divide the ceiling space into smoke containment zones as required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), such as Dubai Civil Defence (DCD).
By controlling smoke movement and directing it toward smoke exhaust openings or mechanical extraction points, these curtains:
• Enhance smoke-extraction efficiency, improving visibility and tenability during evacuation and firefighting.
• Reduce the capacity and cost of mechanical smoke-exhaust systems, optimising the overall smoke-management design.
• Comply with NFPA 204, BS EN 12101, and DCD smoke-control guidelines, ensuring code-approved compartmentation.
Because they remain permanently in place, static draft curtains require no activation and provide fail-safe performance with minimal maintenance — a key benefit for high-bay warehouses and logistics facilities.
High-Performance Construction and International Certification
Kent Static Draft Curtains are constructed from medium-weight fiberglass fabric, coated on both sides with aluminium-pigmented polyurethane, forming a reflective heat shield that maintains fire integrity up to 600 °C for 2 hours and 1,000 °C for 1 hour.
All Kent draft curtains are tested and certified to leading international standards, including:
• BS 476 Parts 6 & 7 – Fire propagation and surface spread of flame
• BS EN 12101 Parts C & D – Smoke and heat control systems
• ASTM E 84 – Surface burning characteristics of building materials
Bespoke Design and Long-Term Reliability
Each draft curtain installed at KIZAD Logistics Park was custom-engineered to suit the project’s roof geometry and smoke-zoning layout. Kent’s in-house design and technical team collaborated closely with project consultants to ensure precision detailing, effective smoke zoning, and integration with mechanical and structural systems. The lightweight, non-mechanical design minimises maintenance while delivering long-term durability, an ideal solution for logistics hubs, industrial parks, and high-bay warehouses where reliability, compliance, and operational efficiency are essential.
Project Impact
The KIZAD Logistics Park installation showcases Kent’s engineering capability to design and deliver large-scale smoke-control systems across complex industrial developments. With 100-meter-wide draft curtains now operational, the project reinforces Kent’s leadership in manufacturing UL- and BS EN-certified smoke and fire curtain systems — trusted across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe for industrial, commercial, and logistics environments.
